Ligue 1 side CS Sedan have confirmed that forward Mathieu Debuchy has agreed to join French Ligue 2 club Saint-Étienne on loan for the remainder of the season. The move is a significant coup for Saint-Étienne, who were relegated from Ligue 1 last term and will be fighting relegation this campaign. Debuchy, 27, spent five seasons at the Stadium de France before joining Ligue 1 giants Paris St-Germain in 2015. However, he struggled to make an impact at PSG and was eventually sold to Wolfsburg in January 2018. Since then, Debuchy has made just six appearances for Wolfsburg and has been linked with a return to France. Now, it seems that his wish has finally come true as he has agreed to join Saint-Étienne on loan until the end of the season. The news comes after CS Sedan announced their decision to release Debuchy from his contract earlier this week. The winger has scored four goals and provided three assists in 19 games for the Ligue 2 side this season, but he has not featured since October due to injury. Despite his lack of form, Saint-Étienne manager Pascal Dupraz believes that Debuchy can still play a key role in helping them avoid relegation. "Mathieu is one of the best players we've had," said Dupraz. "He's a top player and I'm sure he'll bring something special to our team." With Debuchy now at Saint-Étienne, the club will hope to bounce back from their relegation struggle and secure survival in Ligue 2 next season. |
